HUB IDEA

Antakya Performative Collective and Janus Artzine joined forces in response to the earthquake that devastated Antakya. Motivated to aid in the city’s reconstruction, they formed a hub focused on the healing power of art. Their public programme aims to create a mobile art space in the form of a caravan for workshops, exhibitions, and creative gatherings accessible to everyone. The caravan serves as a platform for public discussion and dialogue while raising awareness through participatory art products. It seeks to engage the community in dialogue and learning experiences, facilitated by artists and organisers.

The members of Antakya Performative Collective (APC) come from different disciplines and fields of work, such as visual arts, performance art, dance, music, video, illustration, civil society and activism. Collective members have been carrying out activities such as workshops, exhibitions, music and performance events together in Antakya since 2011. APC was established in 2018 to transform all these organically formed collaborations into an interdisciplinary, experimental, investigative culture and arts platform and to open up opportunities for local and transnational collaborations. Taking inspiration from Antakya in its works, APC prioritised creating space for art in daily life in the city and used the entire city as a laboratory.

Janus artzine is an art project which is made of A3 kraft paper with a special folding technique. As two separate artists living in Antakya, we created our own expression space on both sides of the paper, with reference to the image of the two-faced Roman god "Janus". Our goal is to ensure that our work is visible and accessible in Antakya and beyond. We have published five issues at different time intervals since January 2018. We distribute to public places with permission or deliver to individuals by hand or via cargo. We also try to reach interested people through our Janus_artzine Instagram account. The content of the first three issues consists of our own drawings and texts pointing to the historical and cultural structure of Antakya. We continue the process with different content in each issue.

Expectations from Transnational Exchange

We would like to continue our Caravan Artist Residency Program during the transnational partnership phase and host artists and curators from abroad on the mobile art field route. We believe that the works of these artists, who will participate in the residency program and have not been directly exposed to trauma, created as a means of their own experiences in Antakya that will contribute to healing by opening a field of dialogue, and will project Antakya with art from an outside perspective and make it more visible. We plan to include local and international events and artistic exhibitions in both countries of the project for the resulting works of local and transnational artists who took part in both phases of the project. In this context, we have expectations from the transnational partnership phase such as local and transnational artist collaborations, experience sharing, and international artist exchange opportunities for visibility in public space via art.
