ŞanoWan is an independent Kurdish theatre based in Diyarbakır, founded in 2016 by artists dismissed from municipal posts. Dedicated to amplifying marginalised voices, it focuses on Kurdish-language theatre and cultural accessibility, especially for women and youth. The group has staged ten plays, organised three festivals, and developed a vibrant cultural venue hosting concerts, screenings, and civic workshops. ŞanoWan sustains itself through ticket revenue and collaborates with institutions such as Anadolu Kültür and the European Endowment for Democracy. It fosters artistic resilience and collective memory through performance and education.

The Skopje Interkultura Hub will host six events aimed at supporting independent culture and ethnic community artists while engaging mainstream audiences. These include two debates, two public space reclaiming events (an exhibition and an interdisciplinary event), and two workshops. The artistic events will feature a mix of independent and marginalised community artists, with a focus on women, LGBT+, and peripheral artists. Workshops will address project writing for ethnic community NGOs and combating hate speech, discrimination, and stereotypes. All events will take place at the Jadro Centre, with its team handling logistics and curation. NGO Esperanza will lead the debates and project-writing workshop, while NGO IMA will handle the workshop on hate speech and manage PR. The Hub will diversify Jadro’s program and enhance awareness and cooperation.

TRANSNATIONAL EXCHANGE IDEA

Inclusion Encounters is a collaboration between Şanowan (Van, Turkey) and Interkultura Hub Skopje (NGO Esperanza, Institute for Media and Analytics, and Centre Jadro, North Macedonia), promoting intercultural dialogue, inclusion, and visibility of Kurdish culture in North Macedonia. The project features exchange workshops in both cities: in Van, sessions on art activism, advocacy, and public visibility will culminate in a debate on cultural access; in Skopje, Şanowan will lead an Art Workshop on Deq Culture and Pop-Art, blending traditional Kurdish tattoo motifs with modern art, ending with an exhibition and a discussion on art’s power to bridge languages, cultures, and communities.

The exchange will strengthen participants’ skills in art activism, intercultural dialogue, and creative collaboration. It will increase the visibility of Kurdish culture in North Macedonia while fostering cultural resilience and expanding access to art for vulnerable groups. By bridging tradition and modernity, the project will nurture a shared understanding of cultural diversity, empower young artists and activists, and make independent artistic expression more visible and valued in the public sphere.

Inclusion Encounters is created in collaboration with Skopje Interkultura.
