HUB IDEA

Following the earthquake, the establishment of the Kömür Culture and Art Centre marked a significant step in creating a safe and creative space for children and youth. Over the coming year, the Children First Association and project partners are working to transform this centre into a sustainable cultural hub. The Huner Hub will focus on three key areas: music, theatre, and creativity. Music education—led by Ma Music Centre—will include rhythm and choir workshops, culminating in student-led performances. Theatre workshops guided by Amed City Theatre will support the formation of a youth theatre group capable of producing its own plays. Meanwhile, creativity workshops will introduce photography, drawing, and caricature to young people aged 14–18. These long-term activities aim to foster artistic expression, community connection, and cultural continuity in Kömür.

The association was founded in Diyarbakır in 2017 together with many human rights defenders. For more than 5 years, it has been carrying out its activities with reference to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in order to support the psycho-social, cultural-artistic, linguistic, mental and physical development of children, as well as to work towards the requirements of the technological and scientific age, to combat child labour, to develop policies for the protection of children's well-being and to support the policies developed.

Since 2017, Amed City Theatre have been filling a significant gap in the field of independent and alternative theatre, not only in Diyarbakır but across the region. Through culture and the arts, they create spaces where citizens—especially young people—can come together, express themselves freely, produce original content and activities, and engage in open dialogue. Their work supports the use of Kurdish in the arts and contributes to the development of democratic citizenship and a more democratic society. In 2020, with the support of our audience, professional chambers, theatre groups, and arts institutions such as EED and the Goethe-Institut, they established a 150-seat theatre centre. Within just one year, their productions reached an average audience of 8,000 people.

Their goals are to bring multicultural music education—rooted in the Kurdish mother tongue—to everyone and everywhere. Music education begins before birth and continues through the Children’s Academy (ages 6–14), the Youth Academy (ages 15–30), and the Dengbêjî and Stranbêjî Academies. Concerts, workshops, and both local and international educational programs are offered, drawing on 13 years of experience and expertise since the founding of the Aram Tigran Conservatory. Currently, 700 students actively participate, supported by a team of 35 professional musicians and instructors, along with 80 volunteers. Traditional songs are compiled, and children’s songs and TV programs are produced for the Kurdish Children’s Channel.
