Environmental changes

12.08.2026
It was a learning activity how environmental and climate changes are tackled in Diyarbakir. Through field visits and conversations we were exploring the current environmental issues in the area as well on the broader outskirts of the region. We were discussing the understanding of climate change, as well as financial aspects of it.
The purpose of the study visit to Diyarbakır was to gain a better understanding of the environmental challenges and the impacts of climate change in the city and the wider region. The visit focused on learning about local approaches to environmental protection, climate adaptation and mitigation, and sustainable resource management.

As part of the programme, we met with representatives of the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, who presented their activities related to environmental protection and climate change. The discussion covered ongoing initiatives, local environmental policies, and the financial mechanisms available for implementing environmental and climate-related projects.

We also visited an educational demonstration site where various plant species are cultivated and preserved. The site serves both educational and conservation purposes and includes a plant (seed) bank dedicated to protecting local and native plant varieties.

Another important part of the visit was a meeting with representatives of a Kurdish civil society initiative. They explained that the protection of olive groves represents not only an environmental issue but also a struggle for land rights, cultural heritage, and the rights of local communities. Their work highlights the close connection between environmental protection and broader social and political issues in the region.

The study visit provided valuable insights into the links between environmental challenges, climate change, local governance, and the role of civil society in promoting sustainable development.
