“Encountering the Ruins”: Talk with Îrfan Amîda and Lal Laleş

Through their own childhood memories, writers Îrfan Amîda and Lal Laleş reflected on the apparition of concrete on the rural Mardin plain. How does the presence of concrete relate to the state and governmentality? Which narratives emerge and which are suppressed in a context where the continuous encounter with a police state through concrete and its different sorts of structurations is imposed physically and mentally? What remains and what cannot?

The hybrid talk was held in Kurmanji with English translation.

“Voicing Voices”: Collection of short films by the Diyarbakır Arts Center (DSM)

The idea of BAK Voicing Voices Collective Production Workshop came out of the excitement that stems from the possibility of rapidly passing through sliding doors of time and space via stories we have been hearing and telling since we were children. We wanted to go on a journey with whispers of women in the universe of emotions and experiences suppressed and kept inaudible by dominant narratives of the city. We went on an adventure to bend the customary narratives together with 12 women living in Diyarbakır, Batman and Mardin who share a collective memory and a common experience-world despite all their differences. Is it possible to complement the courage of becoming the subject of the transformation in the story to the weight of witnessing and the urgency of bringing visibility to what we have seen? Instead of grand, noisy and comprehensive narratives, can Voicing Voices offer a possibility to breathe by following the stories that transform, become liberated and diversified through joy of a game and vulnerability of staggering?

“Beton”: Exhibition by Merkezkaç Art Collective

The exhibition focuses on revealing human-concrete relationships, mainly through the eyes of women. It questions concretisation, unplanned developments and gentrification, in Diyarbakır and globally. The works engage with the exploitation and abusive profit making of urbanisation and their consequences on the political, economical, social or cultural field while envisaging alternative approaches.

Somewhere in an unknown geographical and temporal location, six objects are shared through sound that broadcast the story of their own dystopian gods. What does each sound tell? Where does it refer us? What symbolism and what frequencies does each of them emit?

NOUCMAS and O Meteoritis invited six artists to work with sounds from Athens, Diyarbakır and Tirana and to examine in their own poetic way their relationship with concrete.
