Ointment Workshop
Building connections with the community, and facilitating voluntary workshops to encourage local women to produce their own homemade ointments and remedies out of local plants.
The Samanlı Mountains are home to a wealth of medicinal plant species. During our field studies with medicinal plant expert Melis Rona, we discovered the significant potential of these plants for various uses. Throughout the project, Rona focused on the plants growing around the çakARAZİ and Kayınormanı Association facilities. She identified specific plants and created recipes that were archived for the hub members to reference and use.
After relocating to the area and building connections with the local community, Rona realized that many of the women had not inherited traditional knowledge about the medicinal or culinary properties of these plants. This knowledge gap inspired her to facilitate a workshop aimed at raising awareness of the abundant plant life surrounding them and their medicinal uses.
The Kayınormanı Association invited local women to the village school, where they were provided with the tools and guidance needed to learn how to produce their own ointments. The workshop also addressed the broader topic of medicinal plants, including the basic principles of harvesting them sustainably from nature. The session emphasized a holistic perspective, focusing on sharing and balance rather than mere consumption.
Overall, the workshop marked a fruitful beginning for future collaborations between experts and the local community, fostering deeper engagement and reciprocal knowledge-sharing for the years ahead.
